Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE) announced that it has participated in a consortium undertaking a pre-feasibility study to assess the development of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) hubs across Asia.

The consortium was comprised of leading steelmakers ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Private Limited, JSW Steel Ltd., Hyundai Steel Company and other value chain players, BHP, Chevron Australia New Energies Pty Ltd, Mitsui & Co., Ltd in August 2025. “K” LINE, participated in it in February 2026 as the strategic expert in shipping technology for carbon dioxide (CO2). Kobe Steel, Ltd. and Low Emission Technology Australia (LETA) also participated in it.

The CCUS Hub study is the first independent industry-led study of its kind in Asia and will examine the technical and commercial pathways to utilizing CCUS in hard-to-abate industries across Asia. The study will focus on the potential to develop large-scale projects which can repurpose, or store, captured CO2

Phase 1 of the study identified five key hub locations, located in India (two hubs), Indonesia, Malaysia, and Australia, from over 3,000 potential storage sites. In phase 2, the identified hubs will be further defined and optimized, with a focus on cost reduction, commercial model development, and more rigorous regulatory gap assessment.

“K” LINE will contribute the consortium by hands-on experience and operational know-how in LCO₂ transportation accumulated through participation in multiple CCS-related service such as “Northern Lights” in Norway and some government-supported projects in Japan. The “K” LINE Group is actively promoting a range of initiatives aimed at supporting its own decarbonization efforts and those of society in accordance with its long-term environmental guidelines, “K” LINE Environmental Vision 2050 *1.

*1 “K” LINE Environmental Vision 2050 - Blue Seas for the Future - is a set of long-term guidelines regarding the environment that was established in 2015 and revised in 2020.
