| |
Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (hereunder called
"K" LINE or the Company) takes pleasure in announcing the publication of its
Environmental Report 2003 (English version) as a follow-up to the previously-announced
Japanese version and updating last years report.
Improvements have been carried out as compared with Report 2002: |
|
| I. |
Detailed descriptions reviewing "K" LINEs
environmental conservation activities during Fiscal 2002 and environmental targets for
Fiscal 2003 |
| II. |
Addition of some new items that were not carried in last
years Report |
|
|
"K" LINE, a global shipping and logistics
company whose core business lies in shipping, has been making steady
environmentally-oriented endeavors such as extending ISO14001 Certification to other Group
companies, constructing an environmental network named "EMS Global Network"* and
other in-house activities.
(* EMS stands for "K" LINEs Environmental Management System.)
As a result of reviewing the achievements for Fiscal 2002, it may well be mentioned that
the Company could, roughly speaking, attain the targets set earlier to a satisfactory
extent. A new level of targets for Fiscal 2003 has now been set up on the basis of last
years substantially successful results.
The Environmental Report 2003 provides an analysis of the results for the Fiscal 2002
targets and introduces a host of new targets for Fiscal 2003 which are summarized below: |
| |
| Review of Achievement of Fiscal 2002 Targets |
| 1. Prevention of Marine Pollution |
| |
/promotion of safety in navigation/cargo operations
/increase of double-hulled tankers
/replacement of *TBT anti-fouling paints with **TF paints
(*TBT means Tributyltin and **TF does Tributyltin Free.) |
| It is confirmed that the above items could be achieved from a numerical
prospective. |
| 2. Reduction of Wastes plus Recycling of Materials |
| We positively and successfully tackled expansion in the use of recycled
paper/using both sides of paper in printing and perfection of segregation of wastes, etc |
| 3. Reduction in Consumption of Natural Resources |
|
/success in reduction of the usage of fuel oil and lubricating oil per ton-mile of
cargo
transported
/success in reducing electric power in offices as compared with previous year (Fiscal
2001), but failed to reduce volume of paper for photocopying, the amount regretfully
having increased as compared with last year |
| 4. Prevention of Air Pollution |
|
/successful reduction in emissions of CO2, NOx and SOx, etc. as compared with last
year
/numerical success in replacement of *R-12 that seriously damages the ozone layer with
**R-134 that results in no damage of any kind
(*R-12 is name for the refrigerant Chlorofluorocarbon.)
(**R-134a is a kind of Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC).) |
|
| |
| Newly Targets for Fiscal 2003 |
| 1. Prevention of Marine Pollution |
| |
/total ban in the use of TBT paints at dock for all ships |
| 2. Proper Management of Occurring Wastes and Exhausts and Recycling
(Reuse) of Materials |
|
/discharge at shore side of all empty bottles/cans occurring onboard for positive
promotion of recycling
/proper management/treatment of dirty water used for cleaning containers after unloading |
| 3. Saving Natural Resources |
|
/control in the use of fuel oil and lubricating oil per ton-mile of transported
cargo through adoption of more energy-efficient appliances such as
electronically-controlled engines and a brand-new cylinder oiling system |
| 4. Prevention of Air Pollution |
|
/total abolishment of R-12 refrigerated containers by the end of 2003
/increase in use of environmentally-friendly substitutes for fluorocarbons such as *R-404a
in refrigerators for provisions and air conditioners onboard newbuildings
(*R404a is a more environmentally-friendly refrigerant than Fluorocarbons that is used as
a refrigerant in refrigerators/air conditioners and an injection agent for sprayers and as
a detergent in production of semi-conductors.) |
