New Containership Building Program

"K"Line (Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd.) Tokyo, is proud to announce that it has decided to place new orders for 4 vessels of 8000TEU type and 5 vessels of 5500TEU type containerships, which will enable "K"Line to make further improvements in its service quality and competitiveness in East-West trades.
These 9 new vessels represent an additional program for new buildings following the earlier program that included 8 vessels of 4000TEU type which was announced in April and May this year. These latest orders reflect "K"Line's wish to further encourage even better service quality by replacing some existing older tonnage and short-term chartered vessels.

These new building orders were placed with I.H.I. Marine United Inc, Japan for the 8000TEU type vessels, and Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., Korea for 5500TEU type vessels, and are to be delivered from the middle of 2006 to the beginning of 2007. The main specs are as follows:

  8000TEU type 5500TEU type
LOA 336.0 m 283.8 m
Width 45.8 m 40.0 m
Draft 13.0 m 12.5 m
Capacity 8120 TEU 5624 TEU
Service Speed 24.5 knot 25.0 knot

The 8000TEU type vessels will be the largest sized containerships built in Japan. Complete details of vessel specs are to be further fine-tuned, bearing in mind that the design is to be considered as eco-friendly wherever possible. The vessels will be deployed to the service between Asia and Europe jointly operated with alliance partner, Yang Ming Line (Taiwan).
As to the 5500TEU type vessels, "K"Line decided to place these additional orders with Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. based on our successful experience from the 7 previous vessels of the same type delivered in 2001-2002.
