Announcement by Maersk K.K. & Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd.
Joint Lease of Kobe Container Terminal RC-3/4/5

Maersk K.K. and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd (herein referred to as "K" LINE) have had separate lease agreements with Kobe Port Terminal Corporation (KPTC) covering Rokko Terminals RC-4/5 and RC-2/3, respectively. From April 1, 2004, however, both parties have agreed to execute a new joint lease with KPTC for RC-4/5 & part of RC-3. While the new agreement is characterized as a "joint lease," terminal operations and stevedoring will be carried out in the same manner as before.

Never before has a pair of major terminal lessees put such a joint lease into practice in Japan. Maersk K.K. and "K" LINE have managed through mutual diligence, efforts and foresight to agree to this joint lease, with a view towards optimizing the space utilization by matching the terminal size more closely with the volumes handled in Kobe.

This joint lease ensures that both parties will remain independent, and that all yard operations, allotment of office space and utilization of terminal systems will be performed by the respective companies.
